There are a few great ways to become involved in the Swing Dance community.
Dallas Swing Dance Society and other Swing Dance Societies are always looking for volunteers. Volunteering usually gets you into the dances for free and you can possibly earn more free dances. Volunteering is great, and if you want to become more involved ask about serving in the non profit organization. Dallas Swing Dance Society is having board member elections right now so if you are a member show up on Sat Nov 23rd and vote.
DSDS participates in the local community and was on Idol Across America, look for the Dallas video. The Swing Dancing starts at 51 seconds and ends around 1:02
Hey Robert,
ReplyDeleteAs someone who was forced into different styles of dance at a young age, the only kind of dancing that has ever actually appealed to me are the ones in which you have a partner, and your blog has definitely reinforced this thought.
I have a few questions about the Comet Swing Dance Society - Do they accept people that are completely new to swing dancing at any time, or are there only specific times when they can join? What time does the dancing take place? Does it cost anything or is it free to students?
On a side note - will you be creating any posts that mention the cost of lessons at any of the other swing dancing places in Dallas?
Hi Megan,
ReplyDeleteComet Swing Society accepts people at any time. Anyone is welcome to come to any of the dances. Comet Swing Society started having paid dances this year, but only some dances cost money. There is a dance this Friday Dec 6th in the galaxy rooms and it is listed as a paid event. Paid events only cost $4 but they might not charge anyone for this last dance.
I made a post earlier about two places in Dallas to swing dance and listed the costs here: http://swingdanceutd.blogspot.com/2013/11/places-to-swing-dance.html
Also there is a meetup group that just started right next to UTD at Campbell and Coit. However, it interferes with Comet Swing Society dances so I haven't gone. http://www.meetup.com/Plano-East-Coast-Swing-Meetup/
I plan on going back and editing some of my previous posts to include the costs of Swing Dances around the metropolis. Additionally, I will make a new post that includes the meetup group and another place that has a different style of Swing Dance. It will include where to go dancing over the holidays, if you are staying in town.
How much does the Dallas Swing Dance Society charge for each dance event? How much is it to be a member? Also, what type of volunteering opportunities are available? I am interested in perhaps joining the Dallas Swing social scene now that I am graduating from UTD this semester. I have enjoyed reading your blog posts about the various events available in the DFW area to learn more about swing dance lesson opportunities.
ReplyDeleteHi!
DeleteDSDS has two different prices, one for the workshop and one for the dance. The price of the workshop is $10 for members or $15 for non-members and includes the whole night. After the workshop, the price is $5 dollars for members or $8 dollars for non-members. A DSDS membership costs $20 and is good for one year.
Volunteers help with the set up or clean up of the dances and take money at the door.
